Hello to all you Law Buff and calves,

“If nothing else is left, one must scream. Silence is the real crime against humanity!” – Nadezhda Mandelstam.

As y’all continue to prepare, take, and move on from Finals, the William A. Wise Law Library wants to share 10 articles that came out last week that we hope inform and entertain you. All of the articles were pulled from either the ABA Newsletter, the AALL Newsletter, Law360, Reuters, CU Boulder Today Newsletter, Frontiers Newsletter, or the vLex Newsletter. Enjoy!

Introduction: “The Reuters headline grabbed me: ‘Free PACER? Bill to end fees for online court records advances in Senate.’ It's a bipartisan bill called the Open Courts Act of 2021 and the Senate Judiciary Committee approved the measure.”

Introduction: “Whether out of necessity or convenience, you can give your keyboard a break and dictate a document in Microsoft Word. You can use the feature in the desktop app, Word for the web, and in the mobile app.”

Summary: “We all have different versions of “cleaning.” For some, the act includes Windex, bleach, and a mop; for others, it means putting away toys, sweeping, and loading the dishwasher. But while “cleaning” can mean everything from straightening up to scrubbing down, when it comes to disinfecting and sanitizing, the definitions, as set by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), are more clear-cut. And as we find ourselves mid-flu season, with the COVID Omicron variant on the rise, it’s important to understand the difference.”

“The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday threw out an appeal from the Biden administration challenging Texas' 6-week abortion ban, but allowed Texas abortion clinics to pursue legal action aimed at preventing private parties from enforcing the law.”

“A new first-of-its kind study aims to shed light on why so many people use cannabis before, during or after working out. It also seeks to answer a critical question: Does THC, which is considered a banned substance by the World Anti-doping Agency, hurt or help performance?”

“With strong lateral partner hiring and other pandemic-era trends making it harder for newly minted attorneys to progress in their careers, junior lawyers should take steps to perfect their elevator pitch and remain true to who they are, as a big part of their success will depend on how well they sell themselves to clients and how genuine they appear, says Emily Weber at Foley & Lardner.”

“A Royal Dutch Shell PLC unit headlines a list of Texas power generators facing a combined $7.5 million in penalties for failing to timely submit winter preparation plans required by state utility regulators in the wake of deadly power outages during a destructive winter storm.”

Introduction: “For many students, the concept of Honor Code is not foreign. The Honor Code promotes academic integrity by articulating expectations for students and teaching staff and prohibiting certain conduct. […] In recent years, with remote learning and exam-taking on the rise, universities are understandably concerned about the increased possibilities of noncompliance. So, what should law students keep in mind with regards to the Honor Code?”
