"I am Iron Man" - Tony Stark

Good morning all you Law Buffs and Calves,

“I am Iron Man,” (Tony Stark, Iron Man). We are all Iron People. Especially as we continue to move into the thick of the Spring 2022 semester. If you need reference or circulation help, be sure to reach out to your friendly neighborhood law librarian.

The following are 10 interesting articles from the previous week. These articles were pulled from either the: ABA Newsletter, AALL Newsletter, vLex Newsletter, Law360, Law Practice Magazine Newsletter, LexisNexis’ Practical Guidance Newsletter, Bloomberglaw Filings of Note and/or Frontiers Newsletter. Enjoy!

“What is the best fee structure for your practice: hourly fees, flat fees, retainers, or contingency fees?”

“The U.S. International Trade Commission agreed to review whether Apple and Ericsson's imports are infringing the other company's patents, just as Texas district court trials between them over 5G patent licensing negotiations were scheduled for the summer of 2023.”

Introduction: “(Feb. 19) is Civil Liberties Day of Remembrance, the anniversary of Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066, which set in motion the removal of thousands of Japanese American families from their homes and their imprisonment in isolated camps. See this brief essay on OurDocuments.gov. Read the order as it was published in the Federal Register Feb. 25, 1942. (HeinOnline has PDFs of the Federal Register starting with its first issue, in 1936. For more about the collection see this guide.)”

Introduction: “Podcasts are great entertainment for long commutes, road trips while eating lunch, or just for some much-needed downtime. But what happens when you’re tired of true crime podcasts?”

Introduction: “February is Black History Month, and the Muse Law Library is proud to present our celebration of Black achievement in the law. Here you will find the full collection of the 47 slides exhibited throughout the Library this month, each one documenting a different Black trailblazer or icon. The people featured here all displayed resounding courage and perseverance as they struggled against injustices and abuses at the hands of an oppressive, bigoted system. You will find lawyers and judges, writers and artists, and civil rights activists all connected by the common thread of a dedication to racial justice.”

Introduction: “Presidential record keepers confirmed Friday that there were classified national security documents among the 15 boxes recently retrieved from Mar-a-Lago as former President Trump has been directed to release his communications to the Jan. 6 House committee. The statement from the National Archives and Record Administration (NARA) comes as the House Oversight Committee last week launched a probe into Trump’s handling of presidential records — and it also confirms the agency has contacted the Justice Department.”

Introduction: “Entrepreneurs are no stranger to stress, anxiety and burnout. That said, some have better ways to manage those challenges than others. For some insight into how to help entrepreneurs negotiating this tricky terrane, Inc. tapped Paul Sheesley, a Washington DC-based psychotherapist, who regularly advises politicians and executives to help them with their work-life balance.“

Excerpt: “More than one billion people—nearly 15% of the world's population—experience some form of disability. In the United States alone, about 61 million people, or one out of every four Americans, live with at least one disability. So, it's probably safe to say that you know someone with a disability or might be disabled yourself. To be clear, these disabilities may not be physical or even visible: they could be learning, developmental or intellectual disabilities, or mental or chronic illness, to name a few. But as common as disability is, not many people know how to talk about disability or how to interact with disabled people."

Excerpt: “Personally, Brian Flores’ courage has helped me come forward to share a story in which I had an opportunity to speak up against an injustice of equity I experienced in my career. I was presented with a platform with the right person in my organization and apprehensively chose not to speak up. As we strive to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal profession, my Black History Month protest is to boycott silence.”

Excerpt: “A lot of Web3 ideas seem to run directly into the existing legal system in complicated and sometimes very funny ways. The NFT world seems to have an impressionistic understanding of copyright law. DAOs, well, they aren’t actually recognized as legal entities in most states. So, in a very technical sense, they can’t actually do anything in the real world. But all these things still exist, and at some point, the law will have to catch up.”
